NEEWER CM26 MAX review: audio comparisons and an review video preview

I got the NEEWER CM26 MAX to improve the audio in my videos. I compared it with my iPhone 16 microphone and Rode PodMic, tested it with a large fan running, and carried it through several walls and doors to check the wireless connection.

The kit comes in a rechargeable case with status lights. The microphones and wireless receiver fit inside, keeping the main components together between uses. The receiver felt very light in my hand, while the microphones had a little more weight.

My kit also included two furry windscreens, two magnetic mounts, a TRS cable, USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C cables, and an L-shaped phone adapter. The windscreens screw onto the microphones instead of using a pressure fit. They felt well made and stayed securely attached.

The small magnets were strong enough that I felt confident using them to attach a microphone to a shirt or hat. There is one magnetic mount for each microphone, and the microphones can also clip directly to clothing.

For the audio comparison, I switched between the iPhone 16 microphone, Rode PodMic, and CM26 MAX. I ran the comparison with a large fan on, then repeated it after turning the fan off. I thought the CM26 MAX made a big difference without the fan. I also moved the microphone from my collar to my pocket because it felt a little hot against my collar.

For the indoor range test, I walked out of my office, through the mudroom, and toward the backyard. The signal passed through several walls and doors before it began breaking up near the back door. It dropped outside, then returned when I came back to the door. I estimated that point was about 30 feet from where I started, with roughly four or five walls and a solid wood door in the path.

This was not an open-area range measurement. The supplied seller listing claims wireless transmission of up to 394 feet forward and 98 feet backward in open, unobstructed areas. My test included substantial obstruction, and I may also have had the unit facing sideways. I did not verify the seller listing’s maximum open-area range.

Overall, my opinion of the CM26 MAX was positive. I liked its sound quality and build quality, and the charging case was convenient. The screw-on windscreens and strong magnetic mounts were especially useful. Based on this hands-on test, I was impressed with the kit and how it performed in my video setup.
