Zooz ZEN37 Review: A Portable Z-Wave Remote for review video preview

I’ve been using the Zooz ZEN37 as a portable remote for a simple household routine: calling someone downstairs without shouting up the stairs. Although it looks like a wall switch, it works as a Z-Wave remote and scene controller.

The remote is USB-C rechargeable, and I like that I can move it around instead of keeping it in one permanent location. It sticks to our refrigerator, which makes it easy to reach in the kitchen. It can also be installed with a wall plate in a standard switch location or alongside other switches. That flexibility is one of the main reasons it works well for us.

I programmed two actions for the same button. One press turns on the light in the upstairs room and plays a message telling him to come downstairs. If that does not get his attention, a double-click triggers a much louder alarm through our voice-assistant THX speakers. In my demonstration, that second action is noticeably louder, and it usually gets a quick response.

This is more than a basic on-and-off switch because the button actions can trigger different scenes through a compatible Z-Wave system. My setup shows one specific use, but the exact actions available will depend on the hub and the automations programmed in it.

There are a few compatibility details to check before buying. The supplied listing identifies this as the Zooz ZEN37 800LR for the US, Canada, and Mexico Z-Wave region. It also says the remote is intended for indoor use and uses a rechargeable LIR2032 battery. A smart speaker alone cannot program it because smart speakers are not Z-Wave controllers. You will need a compatible Z-Wave hub.

For our setup, the value is straightforward. I can keep the remote on the refrigerator, press once for the normal downstairs message, and double-click when a louder alert is needed. It gives us a convenient physical control without requiring a phone.
