I’ve been remodeling my house for the past 12 months, and this DEWALT pocket laser distance measurer has become one of the tools I reach for regularly. Its biggest advantage is straightforward: it fits in my pocket. I can keep it with me while I work instead of putting it down somewhere and having to find it again.
The supplied listing identifies it as the DEWALT DW055PL 55 ft. Pocket Laser Distance Measurer. It describes one-button operation, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and an included wrist strap. The listing suggests it for electrical work, plumbing, and basic household measurements.
In my use, the single-button control has been easy to operate. I normally leave the display set to inches, but pressing and holding the button cycles through meters, decimal feet, and feet with inches. During the video, for example, it displayed my ceiling measurement as 5.3 feet and then as 5 feet 3 7/8 inches.
I’ve checked its readings against a standard tape measure several times, and the results have been accurate enough for the remodeling work I’m doing. I’m not claiming laboratory precision, and I was uncertain in the video whether its displayed fractions go down to 1/16 or 1/8 inch. What matters for my work is that the readings have been close enough and consistent with my tape-measure checks.
My main complaint is the older Mini-USB charging connection rather than USB-C. It does come with a charging cable, which makes that less inconvenient. Battery life has been very good in my experience. I believe I charged it only once during the past year, and the display was still showing a full battery about four months after that charge. I was using it less often near the end of my remodeling project, so that is not a controlled runtime test.
I have also had positive experiences taking other DEWALT tools to a service center, although that does not establish the warranty or service terms for this particular measurer. I have not independently verified the warranty mentioned in the video.
Overall, the DW055PL has worked well for the way I use it. It is compact, quick to operate, and accurate enough in my comparisons with a tape measure. I liked it enough to give one to my brother-in-law for Christmas. The outdated charging port is the one clear drawback, but it has not outweighed the convenience of carrying the measurer in my pocket.
